Rug size guide
Start with the furniture arrangement, not only the floor dimensions. Standard and custom-size area rugs should connect the pieces around them and leave a deliberate border.
For a compact seating area, place at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug. In a larger room, a rug that holds all seating legs creates the calmest composition. Mark the proposed outline with painter’s tape before ordering and check door clearances.
Choose a rug that extends far enough beyond every side of the table for chairs to remain on the pile when pulled out. Measure the table at its largest extension. Rectangular rugs suit most tables, while round rugs can echo a round dining table.
A large rug can sit beneath the bed and extend at the sides and foot. A smaller alternative is to begin the rug in front of the bedside tables, or use runners on either side. Check that the visible border feels balanced from the doorway.
