Wool rug care guide
Care that protects the pile and finish.
A handmade wool rug is resilient, but gentle routine care helps preserve its colour, texture and shape. Always follow the care guidance supplied with the specific rug.
Vacuum gently and regularly
Use suction only, without a rotating beater bar, and work in the direction of the pile. Avoid repeatedly vacuuming fringes and carved edges. New wool rugs may release loose surface fibres at first; gentle vacuuming helps remove them without pulling the pile.
Rotate for even exposure
Rotate the rug periodically so foot traffic and daylight affect the surface more evenly. A suitable rug pad can reduce movement, soften pressure on the foundation and help the rug sit securely on hard flooring.
Respond to spills promptly
Blot liquid with a clean, absorbent, colourfast cloth. Do not rub, scrub or soak the pile. Test any treatment in an inconspicuous area first, and contact a professional rug cleaner for persistent marks or large spills.
Use specialist cleaning
Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals, machine washing and unsupervised steam cleaning. Wool-and-viscose or silk blends need particular care because moisture can change their sheen and texture. Tell the cleaner the rug material and construction before treatment begins.
Store by rolling, not folding
Clean and fully dry the rug before storage. Roll it around a sturdy tube with the pile protected, wrap it in a breathable covering and keep it in a dry space away from direct sunlight and heavy objects.
